Denstone Youth Fund

Denstone Youth Fund AGM, 13th May 2015

Chairperson’s speech

Since Christmas of this year, the Denstone Youth Fund committee have all become increasingly busy which has made it impossible for us to continue with our Games Nights. DYF has achieved its aims and objectives and so the committee and trustees discussed the future of DYF and decided that the best course of action was to wind DYF up. The committee and the Trustees are therefore resigning taking effect tonight.

We have approached All Saints School, Denstone Pre-school Playgroup and Ryecroft Middle School with a view to them benefiting from the remaining funds.

I would like to pay tribute to the current committee and Trustees for all their hard work and dedication to DYF and to the founding committee members who have provided such excellent facilities for the children of Denstone by their various fundraising activities.

Jacquie Payne

As a post-script to the meeting:

All Saints School are going to use the DYF donation to create a memorial garden with a bench in memory of a much loved member of staff, Mrs Ross. They will also improve the reading scheme.

Denstone Pre-school Playgroup will use the DYF donation towards equipment and their on-going costs to ensure this valuable group continues for the children of Denstone.

Ryecroft Middle School will use the donation to fund on-going projects.

Denstone Youth Fund was founded after the 2004 Vital Villages Survey highlighted the complete lack of recreational facilities for the children of Denstone.  The original members were Debbie Andrew,  who became Chair,  Sarah Bentley who became Secretary,  Liz Ratcliffe who became Treasurer,  Susanne Smith,  Jane and Glynn Walker.

The original team was joined by other people over the years whose enthusiasm and hard work helped DYF with the various fundraising activities including a Bollywood Night,  Sponsored Bike Rides,  New Year’s Eve Parties,  a Burns Night,  Denstone Factor and the Denstone Show but also with grant applications and project management.  Denstone Youth Fund also have the local community and Parish Council to thank for supporting the various fundraising events and planning applications.

Denstone Youth Fund has successfully completed two major projects – the Junior Play Area on Oak Road and the Teen Recreation Area on the Old Railway Line.

At the AGM in 2010 the two remaining original committee members,  Debbie Andrew and Sarah Bentley,  decided to hand over the reins to a new committee.  There were some further changes at the AGM in 2011,  and the membership of the committee is now as follows:

Jacquie Payne,  Chair
John Allen,  Vice Chair
Claire Platt,  Treasurer
Mick Rushton-Butters,  Events and Secretary
Melanie Clemson
Caroline Vernon
Damon Vernon

In June 2012 DYF were asked to organise a celebration afternoon for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The weather wasn’t kind but the Village Hall came to the rescue and we relocated there from the Old Railway Line. The weather didn’t dampen the atmosphere and everyone seemed to enjoy the event.

The weather did behave for the Denstone Show on 8th September and we had a great time organising the Dog Show – here are two photos from the event..

The Preschool Group approached us to ask if we could help them buy a Connect 4 and we delighted to help out.

We hold a Games and Crafts Night once a month in the Village Hall on a Friday night, starting at 6.30, with a break in July and August.
