Denstone and District Garden Guild was formed nearly 50 years ago to provide a platform for people interested in gardening and plant life in general to get together, exchange ideas and enjoy talks from speaks who specialise in various aspect of gardening and associated subjects. Our most recent guest speaker was a master thatcher who gave us a fascinating and witty talk about his trade and the characters he has met over the last thirty years.
Meetings are held in Denstone Village Hall at 7.45 p.m. on the first Monday of each month from September through to April. A fund raising evening is held, usually in late May, and one or two trips are arranged during the summer to venues with gardening interest. This year the Guild enjoyed an evening visit to Bleak House at Bagnall (the garden of one of our recent guest speakers, where we were able to wander round the fascinating garden and enjoy homemade scones, tea and coffee) and an all day trip to the Royal Horticultural Association garden at Harlow Carr where we were blessed with good weather.
For many years the Guild has been responsible for awarding what is known as The British Legion Cup to anyone who has enhanced village life, or the Garden Guild in particular.
The Guild is one of about 45 members of the Staffordshire Association of Garden Guilds which meets quarterly at Haling Dene Centre in Penkridge, and is also affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Association which allows us group entry to RHS gardens.
Membership of the Guild at present is 77 and we are always pleased to welcome new members. Anyone who is interested in joining, or would like to come and along and see what we do, should come along to Denstone Village Hall on the first Monday of the month September through to April at 7.45 p.m
